Meet Ashley: Assistant Summer Staff Director!

Updated: Feb 28, 2022

Ashley Higgins has a long standing connection with Frontier Camp. She was a camper for eight years, and a summer staffer for several years after that. We’re excited to have Ashley on board as the Assistant Summer Staff Director. Be sure to say hi to her this summer when you see her running around!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Oh, where to start?? I’m 23, I am the 3rd in a line of 7 siblings (yay big families!), and I attended and graduated from a Bible Institute in Wyoming called Frontier School of the Bible. I like swimming, hiking, baking, reading, cloud watching, stargazing, hanging out with friends, and my favorite color is green! I’m not a fan of coffee unless it’s mostly creamer, but I love tea. I’m not (very) afraid of heights, but I am afraid of the dark. And wasps. I really don’t like wasps. I prefer cold weather more than I do hot weather, even though I’m a born and raised Texan!

How did you get into camp ministry?

Well, I was kind of born into it! My parents met working on staff at Frontier Camp a long, long time ago. Both of my grandfathers spent many years serving on the Board of Directors, and nearly all of my family (immediate and extended) has spent some time working at FC. While growing up, I always spent at least one week of my summer here at camp. And as soon as I was old enough, I started working on summer staff.

I didn’t work at Frontier Camp during the time I was at school in Wyoming.  But during one of those summers, I was part of a ministry that the school has called “Camping Team.” I spent the whole summer traveling with a few other students to different camps that needed counselors. I spent time at camps in Nebraska, Utah, Idaho, and Montana. It was a really amazing experience getting to go out and see how the Lord is using camp ministry all over the U.S. to impact kids and youth for Christ! Although I loved getting to see how other camps operate, Frontier Camp will always have a special place in my heart. I am beyond thankful that I get to work here and be a part of this ministry!

What are you most looking forward to as the Assistant Summer Staff Director?

I’m really excited to get to mentor and disciple the female summer staff while camp is in session!

What is your favorite Bible verse/passage/story?

Man, that’s a hard question! I think it changes for me depending on the season of life I’m in.  One of my all time favorites is Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” These verses have been a huge comfort to me in seasons of fear, grief, confusion, and even guilt and shame. Nothing in this world can separate me from God’s love! Not people, not circumstances – not even myself! I think that’s pretty neat and reassuring!

What are your hobbies/what do you like to do in your free time?

I love going on walks! Reading, doing puzzles, and going thrift shopping are also things I like to do. And I really enjoy painting. I’m a pretty social person, so I really enjoy anything that I can do with friends!

What is your favorite building/place at camp?

At the moment I would probably say the Brown House because that’s where I live and go home to every evening! Other than that, there’s a new trail that was recently cut out along Fossil Creek that is SO cool! I’ve really enjoyed walking that trail a bunch recently!

What is a special talent/random fact of yours?

I’m going to say that my random fact is also my special talent! I think I have overactive tear ducts so when I laugh, I cry a lot. I mean a lot. If people walk in and don’t realize that I’ve been laughing, they get pretty concerned for me! So there you go . . . my fun fact and special talent: laughing makes me ugly-cry!
